Detail

Multiple buffer overflows in the Resolution Service for Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and Microsoft Desktop Engine 2000 (MSDE) allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service or execute arbitrary code via UDP packets to port 1434 in which (1) a 0x04 byte that causes the SQL Monitor thread to generate a long registry key name, or (2) a 0x08 byte with a long string causes heap corruption, as exploited by the Slammer/Sapphire worm.

Id Description
4578 Microsoft SQL Resolution Service Monitor Thread Registry Key Name Overflow

Microsoft SQL Server and Desktop Engine contain a flaw that may allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code. The issue is due to the SQL Server Resolution Service not properly sanitizing remote user input. If an attacker sends a specially crafted request (first byte set to 0x04 followed by a large string) they may be able to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the SQL server.
4577 Microsoft SQL Resolution Service 0x08 Byte Long String Overflow

Microsoft SQL Server and Desktop Engine contain a flaw that may allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code. The issue is due to the SQL Server Resolution Service not properly sanitizing remote user input. If an attacker sends a specially crafted request (byte set to 0x08 followed by long string and colon), they may be able to overflow a buffer to execute arbitrary code on the system.
