Detail
Problem Description: Updated Ethereal packages that fix various security vulnerabilities are now available. This update has been rated as having moderate security impact by the Red Hat Security Response Team. 2. Relevant releases/architectures: Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS (Advanced Server) version 2.1 - i386, ia64 Red Hat Linux Advanced Workstation 2.1 - ia64 Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES version 2.1 - i386 Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS version 2.1 - i386 Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS version 3 - i386, ia64, ppc, s390, s390x, x86_64 Red Hat Desktop version 3 - i386, x86_64 Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES version 3 - i386, ia64, x86_64 Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS version 3 - i386, ia64, x86_64 Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS version 4 - i386, ia64, ppc, s390, s390x, x86_64 Red Hat Enterprise Linux Desktop version 4 - i386, x86_64 Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES version 4 - i386, ia64, x86_64 Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS version 4 - i386, ia64, x86_64 3. Problem description: Ethereal is a program for monitoring network traffic. Several denial of service bugs were found in Ethereal's protocol dissectors. Ethereal could crash or stop responding if it reads a malformed packet off the network. (CVE-2006-1932, CVE-2006-1933, CVE-2006-1937, CVE-2006-1938, CVE-2006-1939, CVE-2006-1940) Several buffer overflow bugs were found in Ethereal's COPS, telnet, and ALCAP dissectors as well as Network Instruments file code and NetXray/Windows Sniffer file code. Ethereal could crash or execute arbitrary code if it reads a malformed packet off the network. (CVE-2006-1934, CVE-2006-1935, CVE-2006-1936) Users of ethereal should upgrade to these updated packages containing version 0.99.0, which is not vulnerable to these issues. 4. Solution: Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata relevant to your system have been applied. This update is available via Red Hat Network. To use Red Hat Network, launch the Red Hat Update Agent with the following command: up2date This will start an interactive process that will result in the appropriate RPMs being upgraded on your system. 5. Bug IDs fixed (http://bugzilla.redhat.com/): 189906 - CVE-2006-1932 Multiple ethereal issues (CVE-2006-1933, CVE-2006-1934, CVE-2006-1935, CVE-2006-1936, CVE-2006-1937, CVE-2006-1938, CVE-2006-1939, CVE-2006-1940) |

24933 | Ethereal H.248 Dissector Unspecified DoS Ethereal contains a flaw that may allow a remote denial of service. The issue is triggered when an unspecified error related to the H.248 dissector occurs, and will result in loss of availability for the service. |
24932 | Ethereal ALCAP Dissector Overflow An unspecified remote overflow exists in Ethereal. With a specially crafted request, an attacker can cause arbitrary code execution resulting in a loss of integrity. |
24931 | Ethereal COPS Dissector Overflow A remote overflow exists in Ethereal. Ethereal fails to properly handle an unspecified issue relating to the COPS dissector resulting in a buffer overflow. With a specially crafted request, an attacker can cause a denial of service and execute arbitrary code resulting in a loss of integrity, and/or availability>. |
24930 | Ethereal OID Printing Routine Overflow Ethereal contains an overflow caused by an off by one error related in the OID printing routine that may allow an attacker to do unspecified impact. No further details have been provided. |
24929 | Ethereal H.245 Dissector Unspecified DoS Ethereal contains a flaw that may allow a remote denial of service. The issue is triggered when an unspecified issue related to the H.245 dissector occurs, and will result in loss of availability for the service. |
24928 | Ethereal SRVLOC Dissector Unspecified DoS Ethereal contains a flaw that may allow a remote denial of service. The issue is triggered when an unspecified issue with the SRVLOC dissector occurs, and will result in loss of availability for the service. |
24927 | Ethereal X.509if Dissector Unspecified DoS Ethereal contains a flaw that may allow a remote denial of service. The issue is triggered when an unspecified issue with the X.509if dissector occurs, and will result in loss of availability for the service. |
24926 | Ethereal UMA Dissector Infinite Loop DoS Ethereal contains a flaw that may allow a remote denial of service. The issue is triggered when an unspecified condition in the UMA dissector causes an infinite loop, and will result in loss of availability for the service. |
