Detail

Buffer overflow in the S/MIME Parsing capability in Microsoft Outlook Express 5.5 and 6.0 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a digitally signed email with a long "From" address, which triggers the overflow when the user views or previews the message.

11422 Microsoft Outlook Express S/MIME Parsing Routine Remote Overflow

Microsoft Outlook Express client will throw an error when it receives an e-mail containing a malformed S/MIME certificate. The resulting error message informs the user of an issue, however the rendered message contains an unchecked buffer. This buffer is meant to hold the sender's e-mail address, and is susceptible overflow by creating an especially large From: field, leading to a loss of integrity.
